Sneak Peak
Here I will discuss all aspects of wearing a skater skirt, including:
- Types of Skater Skirt
- Skirt Lengths
- How to Style Tops
- How to Style Leggings
- Shoes to Wear
- Dressing for Winter
- Dressing for Summer
- Bonus Tip
1. What Is a Skater Skirt?
Skater skirts come in three basic styles:
- Pleated: Pleated skater skirts are available in a variety of pleat styles. These include box, knife, and micro pleats.
- A-line: A-line skater skirts are wide with a gentle flare.
- Circle: A circle skater skirt is flowy and bound to bounce with your cadence and the wind. If you are visiting a windy area, you should choose a heavy material like leather or a denim skater skirt.
2. Skater Skirt Fit
A general rule of thumb: Whatever the style, most ladies will find wide waistbands to be more comfortable than thin ones.
Mid-Length Skater Skirts
Skater skirts are typically worn knee-length to mid-thigh length. This is because they are styled as a street fashion for the daring lady. They are also popular in clubs and at parties. Girls who fancy mini skirts will find pencil skirts to be monotonous compared to a skater skirt.
Short Skater Skirts
The ideal length of the skirt depends on the occasion and personal taste, but try to avoid wearing a skater skirt that is too short. Test if it falls below your index finger when standing straight. This is especially important with billowy styles. If you want to wear your skater skirt to work, opt for knee-lengths.
Does Size Matter?
Plus size ladies can style a skater skirt by wearing it knee-length or just above the knee. The same goes for short ladies. For thin people, wearing a long shirt and a low belt over it can emphasize the hips. Attires with flared mini skirts seem to exaggerate the bottoms of even thin women.
3. What Top to Wear With a Skater Skirt
The best and most preferred tops to wear with a skater skirt are:
- Crop tops: Any crop top that is not so revealing is great. Because skater skirts are mostly worn waist-high, they pair well with crop tops.
- Form-fitting Tees: Accentuating your figure adds to the drama of the skirt volume and is very flattering.
- V-necks: V-necks draw attention to your midline and thus, the shape around your midline. Pronounce your curves by wearing a V-neck!
- Scoop necks: Scoop necks have a similar effect as V-necks, except they balance out an hour-glass figure.
- Avoid: Avoid off-the-shoulder tops. They tend to imbalance your outfit.
Styling Your Chosen Shirt (Plus Some Unconventional Styling Tips)
Tucking in your top is a matter of personal choice, depending on how high you wear your skirt and the length of the top. Some tops like camisoles and tee shirts may be too long for your style. Here are some tips for different shirt styles:

- Always compare how the top looks when tucked in and untucked.
- A button-up shirt that falls to your hip may be nice even if it is not tucked in.
- If the top looks ridiculous when tucked, consider wearing a blazer, cardigan, sweater or jacket over it. A denim jacket is also wonderful with a skater skirt or dress.
Patterns Vs. Solid Skater Skirts
Here's a guide for pairing colors with patterns when wearing a skater skirt:
- If you choose to wear a floral skirt, go for a solid top.
- If your skirt is neutral, choose a print top. A metallic silver or gold shirt or tee is also fabulous.
- You can also choose to go monochromatic. If you do choose to wear this way, opt for colors that are neither too bright nor too dark.
- Conversely, you can add any color blazer-skirt suit and a blouse in another color for accent. For instance, you can wear a black skirt, black jacket, and a white camisole or shirt.
Masculine Accessories for a Feminine Look
Because of the femininity of the skater skirt, you can get away with wearing masculine tops. If you fancy the idea of wearing men's shirts, opt for a longer skirt. Male shirts, if possible sleeveless, are some of the best tops for long skater skirts. Even so, this outfit is not good for bulky women. Ladies with big hips look good with a top that does not go further than the hip. If you must wear a coat or jacket that is longer than the skirt, avoid buttoning.
Is Makeup an Accessory? Yes!
Your accessories and makeup mean a lot to your look. Even a good outfit accessorized in a way bad can look outrageous. If you wear a bold hairstyle, lipstick or jewelry, go for a skirt in neutral colors. Simple accessories bring a good outcome if your clothes are bright.
Your clutch bag can match either with your skirt or top. Else, try a bag in a color close to your shoes. Most importantly, take the mirror test before going out. If you look good to yourself, you will look great to others and you deserve to be confident. You will be glad that you chose the best clothes and accessories to wear with your skater skirt.
4. What Leg-Coverage to Wear With a Skater Skirt
Let's be honest; skater skirts can be paired with pants, leggings, or tights. Leg coverage gives you the freedom to wear skaters in a modest way. Tights are essential additions to skater skirt outfits for winter.
Sheer Legwear
Toned pantyhose with skater outfits are particularly conservative and can be sexy as well. Long socks can look great. Skater skirts look amazingly youthful paired with knee-high socks and above-the-knee skater skirts. Pro tip? Always watch the colors of your clothes to avoid clashing.
Opaque Legwear
For a more conservative look, you can wear your skater skirt with opaque legwear. These can be tights, leggings or skinny jeans. Complete the outfit with ankle or mid-calf boots.
To look sexier but still modest, choose nude shoes and hosiery. If you like, go for fishnet leggings over toned tights. A laced hemline is also sexy.
Layers, Layers, Layers!
During the winter, layering your skater skirt or other mini skirts with pantyhose is a must. When the weather is too cold, you can layer two pairs of leggings or tights to keep you warmer. A pair of cushioned boots will do the rest.
Shoes and Tights?
The best shoes to wear with tights and skater skirts are closed-toe varieties. Sneakers, pumps, and boots of any height are okay. Heeled boots or pumps are ideal for adding height. Consider wearing thick socks, two pairs of tights or knee-high boots if the weather is very bad. If you must wear casual, strappy or open shoes, opt for leggings instead.
5. What Shoes to Wear with a Skater Skirt
Shoes to pair with a skater skirt should be attractive, fashionable, and comfortable. Wearing a skater skirt is about making the legs and waist focal points. The best types of shoes for this outfit are those that reveal your legs. This does not mean you can't use leg-wear items like pantyhose.
Boots
Boots will generally go well with skater and other mini skirts or dresses. They are a great pairing in winter as you can layer them with tights or leggings. Use any length boots so long as they do not disagree with the style of your other clothes.
- Combat boots create a care-free and tough look.
- Over the knee boots look great if the hemline leaves some margin from the top of the boot.
- Ankle boots are fabulous with A-line outfits.
- Lace-up boots pair well with patterned or printed skirts.
Boots can seem to shorten and thicken the legs. They are therefore a good match for tall or slender ladies. Short or petite women can add height with platform boots.
Sneakers
Sneakers create a cool and distinctive look with skater outfits. They are perfect with casual, short clothing; they tend to dress an outfit down. These include mini dresses or skirts.
Sneakers pair well with leggings. They let you mix colors and patterns in any way you like. You can create different styles no matter whether your skirt is pleated or circular.
- If your skirt is neutral or dark, try to choose colored sneakers.
- For a patterned skirt, try dark, neutral or white sneakers.
- If you have long or slim legs, go for converse high tops. They reduce your leg-line and make your legs look shorter and thicker.
- Ladies with medium to thick legs should wear low tops with skater skirts. These shoes make legs appear thinner and taller.
Heels
Heels are cute on short and petite ladies regardless of the clothing they wear. Lace-up heels are particularly suitable for parties and dinners. For a club, you can wear spiked pumps although they might look odd and cheap at other events. Platform pumps look fabulous for many occasions especially if you have wide legs.
Flats
Flats are nice with skater skirts for casual wear, particularly in summer. They look best if they closely match your skin tone. You can wear them low or high heeled depending on your situation. If the weather is hot, opt for flat sandals or other strappy footwear. If you want to elongate your legs with flats, you can select pointy-toe varieties.
6. Wearing a Skater Skirt In the Winter Season
During the winter, skater skirts can be very uncomfortable if not layered well. In these months, wear your skirt with tights or thick leggings. The best shirts for this season are long-sleeved. Adding layers also add warmth. Cardigans and sweaters can be tucked-in to add warmth and emphasize the high waist.
In the winter, thick clothes are important. Wearing so many layers is not ideal. Choose warm and preferably long-sleeved clothing. Use a scarf and a warm headgear if necessary. Wearing socks under a skater skirt or dress is also acceptable if they agree with the outfit.
Accessories in Winter
Accessories for a skater skirt and tights outfit include gloves, necklaces and a bag. Use simple jewelry and a shoulder or cross-body bag for accent. Carry a bag big enough for putting some clothes in case the weather changes.
Dark-Colored Skater Skirts are Best for Special Occasions and . . . You Guessed it: Winter!
A black or dark skater skirt brings a lot of options. Almost any outfit idea can work. The idea is to add colors, styles, and textures to jazz up your skirt. Although you can pair a black skater skirt with any color clothes or accessories, brighter colors are more pronounced and look better. The design and material of your skirt are also worth consideration.
Dress Up Your Black Skater Skirt
A black skirt suit is fabulous if accentuated with other colors. You can put on such an outfit for business or work if the skirt is not too short. If you must wear black shoes with this attire, and again, spice it up by choosing bright accessories. For instance, you could leave the blazer unbuttoned to reveal a white tank or camisole underneath. Should you want to button the jacket, use light makeup or a statement necklace. It is nice to make sure that the blazer/jacket does not hide too much of the camisole.
Wearing a black skirt and a black top (like a vest or blouse) amounts to wearing a black dress. You should dress up this outfit as you would your black dresses. A simple way of styling this setup is to wear shoes and a jacket in the same color. For instance, you could wear both a green jacket and shoes. Mixing colors is okay if they do not clash.
When selecting the clothes to wear with your black skater skirt for a party or night out, consider the theme of the event. Such occasions will normally have a specific dress code. If there is no exact dress code, think of what others are likely to wear. Do not overdo on anything or you might end up feeling lost.
Wearing black from head to toe in the winter is acceptable in most scenarios. But you can still add some spice by having at least one item in another color. A colorful necklace or scarf is adequate in jazzing up your ensemble.
7. Wearing a Skater Skirt in the Summer
During the summer, choose light-weight tops in bright colors. Avoid long sleeves unless you can balance with fancy leggings or tights. You can wear lighter varieties in summer to fashion your clothes. Pair with casual tops like lace or crop tops for warm weather, and layers in chilly conditions.
Casual Accessories
For casual wear, or in warmer weather, you can choose printed tops and sandals. A denim jacket can also look amazing. Such pairing goes well during the summer. If you like a classic look, pick a striped top. For a simpler look, put on toned shoes and a neutral top. A blue tank top or button shirt will do. When it's not too hot, a plaid top will pair well especially with a circle or pleated skirt.
How to Color Match
To wear mixed colors, have a theme in mind. For instance, if your theme is blue, you could wear clothes with shades of blue, green and purple. Otherwise, mix in neutral colors like brown boots with black tights, grey skater skirt, blue or black cardigan, white shirt and a scarf in one of those colors. Remember the focus will be mainly on your legs and mini skirt.
8. BONUS: What to Wear With a Leather Skater Skirt
A leather skater skirt is a statement in and of itself. Pairing it with overly sexy tops creates an exaggerated look. Choose modest tops for a cute and stylish outcome. The idea is to balance the hardness of the skirt with a softer, feminine touch.
Wear your skirt with a neutral button shirt and pumps or boots for a classic look. For layering, add a cropped blazer or sweater. Use stylish accessories like metallic necklaces, earrings, and a bracelet to complete the outfit.
How to Wear a Leather Skirt . . . Modestly
For a more modest look, choose a turtleneck and ankle boots, or lace-up boots with a T-shirt. Try your skater mini skirt with a lace blouse in bright colors. To make the outfit more refined, choose fancy, feminine heels. You can also add more female niceties like florals, tie front or ruffles.
Add Laid-Back Fabrics
To create a trendy look, choose a laid-back pairing. Try a cropped sweatshirt, patterned tee or a denim shirt. Add some fun by tucking in or tying a knot at your belly. Pair with boots or flats. Sneakers will also go well with this outfit.
Leather Lovers Beware
Avoid wearing leather skater skirts with leather jackets and boots. The look is too masculine. If you must pair this way, use highly feminine accessories like simple but elaborate makeup, hair adornments, necklace, earrings, and a large bag.

Hello! This was really helpful and greatly appreciated. Was wondering if I could get any recommendations for places to buy skater skirts

Very comprehensive post, we'll done!
In the last part it made me laugh when you said 'avoid wearing a leather skirt with a leather jacket" because I got comment on my blog before I closed it saying "check out my blog". When I looked the first thing I saw was this girl in a leather mini skirt and jacket, I was laughing soo much. Double leather=double wrong!! Let me know if you open a fashion hall of crime mistakes and I'll send the picture.

Good for you Liselle's World. In fact, it's not cast in stone that you can't wear a certain outfit with specific tops. But some clothes look ridiculous when worn together while others look like they were made for each other.

I bought a skater skirt recently and did not know what tops would suit it. Now I do, thanks for the tips.
